  2. Jalan2: Karimun Jawa, Indonesia, September 2011

    October 10, 2011 by Rizky

Beautiful beaches, white soft sand, tamed sharks, and of course, gorgeous corals :) I went to this island of Karimun Jawa with some college friends and it was awesome. We stay for 4 days with 2 days of snorkeling (2 times each, before and after lunch), breakfast and lunch for 2 days, for only Rp.375.000 (about $40, prices may be different for foreigner), including ferry tickets. Karimun Jawa has so many beautiful beaches. Its people are ready to accept tourists. Here, you can see how typical Indonesian run their daily lives: attend mosque in the dawn, fraternize, fishing, and gather with their families It is advised that you come to this island in September or April because the weather is great and not so many tourists at that time. Never come in July or January, this place may be overcrowded and the weather is extremely bad especially in January, there is even a chance that you will trapped in this island for weeks as the ferry (and smaller ships) wont sail if the storm come. And also, there is no bank here, no ATM, so it’s a must to bring money in cash (in rupiah) Sorry for the low video quality, I took it with my smartphone camera. :)

  3. PRAMBANAN Central Java, Indonesia

    by Rizky

Indonesia’s largest Hindu holy place is Prambanan, in Central Java, a religious treasure that dates back to the 9th century and originally included 237 temples. An earthquake struck and for many centuries the buildings lay buried beneath the ground until, in 1918, archaeologists began to reconstruct the main temples. The individual sections of the Candi Lara Jonggrang were rebuilt like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which made the reconstruction process particularly laborious, but in 1953 the rebuilding of the central temples was completed. The Candi Siva rises 47 metres into the sky and is the tallest in Prambanan and contains four inner chambers that face the four points of the compass. The main Hindu god, Shiva, is depicted in the southern chamber, whilst the sculpture of his reborn wife, Durga, is located within the temple’s northern chamber. Thankfully, due to the hard work and determination of many archaeologists, the symbolic meaning of the old Hindu god, Shiva, God of Destruction and Renewal, is well on its way to being fully realized.

Leading economic expert Jim Rogers traveled to 150 countries over 150000 miles in three years – follow his adventures here on FentonReport. In this video Jim visits Borobudur in Indonesia. Copyright Jim Rogers, all rights reserved, provided as a special contribution to the FentonReport www.fentonreport.com Borobudur is a ninth-century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa. The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kamadhatu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). During the journey the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with 1460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades. Evidence suggests Borobudur was abandoned following the fourteenth century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. Worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the then British ruler of

Must Visited Places Around Lake Toba

    ]]>

World famous is the crater Toba Lake in the Batak highlands; approximately five hours drive from Medan. Toba Lake is the largest lake in South East Asia and also one of the most spectacular, surrounded by tall mountains and with the large island of Samosir in the middle.

The centerpiece of North Sumatra, Lake Toba’s bracing climate and magnificent panoramas clear the mind and soothe the soul. For decades a magnet from regional and foreign visitors alike, Toba has developed into a full-featured highland resort while retaining the rustic charm and relaxed ambiance that define Toba’s attraction.

There are a lot of must-visited-places around Lake Toba, the top 5 of them are:

    1.      Ambarita

Ambarita is an ancient Batak tribal village on Samosir Island, in Lake Toba. It is located an hour’s walk northwest from Tuk Tuk or about 20 minutes by boat. I visited it together with a small group of AsiaExplorers members.

What makes Ambarita interesting, from an anthropological standpoint, is that during ancient times the Toba Batak people of Ambarita practised a form of carnibalism. What remains today is the cluster of stone chairs where the village elders held council. Whenever an enemy was captured, the elders would invite the rulers of neighbouring villages to a conference, to determine the fate of the victim. The victim is held in behind bars under one of the houses.

    2.      Parapat

Gateway to Danau Toba, Parapat is a great place to stock up on supplies and enjoy the semblance of an urban existence before plunging into the rugged countryside. This is a necessary stepping stone to some of Indonesia’s most interesting backcountry.

Parapat may not have a distinct tourism flavor, but it is well stocked with shops and hotels. Given its status as a secondary transport hub, it’s also well connected to the rest of the region.

The pier to the south of town is the launching point for Danau Toba holidays. Ferries shuttle passengers across the lake to Samosir Island, a destination that was once known for its party atmosphere. Today Samosir is much quieter but still well worth the visit.

    3.      Simanindo

Simanindo is a small Toba Batak village on the northern part of Lake Toba, about 16 km from Ambarita. Tourists come here to view the restored house of the Toba Batak king. This house has since been turned into a museum. In front of the museum is a row of ancient Toba Batak tombs of the ancient Simanindo kings. Just as in Pematang Purba, the Batak kings of Simanindo are Christians. Hence there are Christian motifs in the design of their tombs.

Next to the Simanindo king’s house is a replica of a traditional Simanindo Batak village. Here, traditional Batak dances are performed daily at 10:30am and 11:45am to a crowd that is almost always exclusively foreigners, and most likely Westerners. When I was there with a group of AsiaExplorers members, we were the only Asians watching the show.

    4.      Tomok

A traditional village with beautiful houses and ancient tombs. Tomok is gateway to Samosir and one of the main landing-points on the island. Rows of stalls sell an array of handicraft, traditional ulos cloth and Batak musical instruments. The 200-year-old stone sarcophagus of King Sidabutar built in the shape of a ship is its most famous sight. He was the Batak King that introduced Christianity to the Batak people. It is located a short walk away from the lake. Tomok is also known for the Sigale-gale dance.

    5.      Tuk Tuk

Samosir Island is accessible by ferry from Ajibata or Parapat. One of the main inhabited areas on the island, Tuktuk has been described as Samosir’s answer to Bali’s Kuta Beach. Tuk Tuk is the main tourist center on Samosir Island. It is a pleasant place for walking around, shopping and admiring the views over Lake Toba. This popular destination offers scenic views at very low prices. People come here to relax, enjoy the sceneries, eat well and cool down fronm tougher travelling in other areas. Culture is available on certain days and in other nearby villages anyway. Western tunes have replaced the harmonic popular songs of the well-singing Bataks.

Lake Toba is beautiful, surrounded by pine-clothed mountain slopes, and our original occupation was to move out swimming, but we were again eager used for various cultural sights, and these we possibly will bargain on Samosir Island. The highland areas around Lake Toba (the lake itself is by 900m) brought forth a feature population, the Bataks, of who in our day still going on for 3 million exist and verbalize the language.
